As of October\u00a02016, its collection topped 15 <a title=\"Petabyte\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petabyte\">petabytes<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_Archive#cite_note-7\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> In addition to its archiving function, the Archive is an activist organization, advocating for a free and open Internet.<\/p>\n<p>The Internet Archive allows the public to upload and download digital material to its data cluster, but the bulk of its data is collected automatically by its <a title=\"Web crawler\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_crawler\">web crawlers<\/a>, which work to preserve as much of the public web as possible.
